If originally most of Kilims come from East (Anatolia, Caucasus, Persia), Tunisia is not outdone. Indeed, the city of Gafsa, situated in the South of the mountain range of the country, has developed since the late nineteenth century a knowledge of exception of these rugs. It might also be due to the presence of a Turkish garrison in the 1960s, that women would have share knowloedge of ancient designs. Therefore the traditional ottoman patterns were pushed on by berber women to achieve even more sophisticated pieces. Entirely hand-made and become very rare, they are highly appreciated.
